all of us alone

All of us alone when we reach to be most ourselves,
and this reaching only ever connects and becomes real
when we touch :- your soul and mine.

Otherwise walking alone at night with a full raging moon
and a rack of sky-wide clouds and this nameless hope
carrying your spirit, alone,

you think in verse, you write a song,
you reach in words because there’s no arm in arm,
no knowing smile, no gentle sheets,
no love to touch.

Through word, sight, or sound, we love at a distance.
We close the gap between us.

I shall never forget the meaning of my life.
